Divya Pahwa, a solicitor at Meridian Lawyers’ Sydney office, was named the winner of this year’s Australian Insurance Law Association (AILA) Ron Shorter Memorial Award 2015.
The award recognises excellence in public speaking by young insurance industry professionals and was conceptualised by Mr Shorter prior to his death in 2012. Mr. Shorter mentored many young professionals throughout his career in insurance.
Following the preliminary round of presentations in March, the awards finals were held on 21 April at CBP Lawyers’ office. Each of the three finalists spoke for 15 minutes on a topic of their choice, without the use of visual aids or notes.
Ms. Pahwa’s presentation, ‘Blurring the Lines Between Intention and Negligence in the Context of Medical Malpractice Insurance,’ took first prize for its informative and engaging style and was selected over those of her competitors, Naseer Taseer (GT Insurance) and Mark Slaven (McCabes).
Judging the competition were Justice Nigel Rein of the Supreme Court of New South Wales, Dallas Booth, Chief Executive Officer of the National Insurance Brokers Association and Leanne Mezrani, Editor of Lawyers Weekly.
Managing Partner Paul Baker commended Ms. Pahwa on her achievement: ‘Meridian is very proud of Divya’s win of such a coveted insurance industry prize and our congratulations go to each of the finalists,’ he said. ‘We encourage our lawyers to be actively involved in industry events and to profile themselves before their peers.’
