It is with deep sadness we share the news that Ashley Jones, a distinguished colleague and Principal of Meridian Lawyers, has passed away.
As a quintessential academic and a highly respected legal professional, Ashley frequently contributed to industry journals and co-authored the book ‘Pre-Court Personal Injuries Procedure in Queensland’, which was recently referred to by the District Court as ‘the leading text’. He was a member of the Litigation and Rules Committee of the Law Society of Queensland and, since 2012, Ashley taught the masters elective ‘Insurance & Risk’ as a visiting lecturer at the University of Queensland.
Ashley’s exemplary contributions to the legal community started as a Judges Associate at the Queensland District Court, followed by several years as a Partner at Norton Rose Fulbright, before he joined Meridian as a key member of our team. While his legal career spanned across all areas of general insurance, he had a particular expertise in defending medical liability claims and disciplinary proceedings regarding medical practitioners.
Ashley was incredibly intelligent, wickedly funny, someone who loved seeing the comedy of a situation and having a laugh. He was a man of many talents, including creating culinary delights like the marinated sand crabs he shared at our Christmas party.
Ashley also had a passion for rugby union and was a staunch Queensland Reds and Wallabies supporter. He had an uncanny ability to identify the tactical strengths of both teams and suggest ways they could improve. A technician at heart and a fierce critic when warranted.
He will be sorely missed. On behalf of Meridian Lawyers, I’d like to extend my condolences to Ashley’s family, colleagues and clients who had the fortune of knowing him.
